All elementary students in Grades K-5 are included in the Elementary Specials program. Specialist teachers teach all the Music, Art, Computer, P.E. and Library Classes included in this program. Kindy students have their own Specialist for all of these subjects. Students attend a different Specials class for 50 minutes every day of the week.

ART

K-5th grades

Description of Course:

The Elementary Art program is focused on providing a rounded, developmentally sound, and integrated experience. Grade level projects are designed to meet curriculum standards and address the visual arts through the following goals and objectives:

  • Explore, practice, and experiment with a variety of art mediums-Art Making
  • Study and understand cultural and artistic trends-Art History
  • Express own individuality and self interests-Communication
  • Explore different perspectives-Interpretation
  • Connect and relate to other subject areas-Interdisciplinary

Students have the opportunity to be imaginative and creative by exploring media, techniques, and processes using various styles of art and a variety of subject matter.

General Music

1st - 4th grades

Description of Course:

The Elementary School offers general music classes once a week for grades 1-4. In these classes, students will sing, move, play instruments, improvise, and learn music history and theory, and much more. In 5th grade, students are asked to take part in one of three different music classes: Choir, Strings or Band.

 

 

Course Objectives:

Students learn to identify and understand the importance and joy of music and music making. They learn to listen to sound, read and write musical notation, and culture a general respect of music and musical culture through kinesthetic activities. Students learn not only to be performers, but respectful and supportive audience members as well.

Suzuki Program

K - 5th grades

Description of Course:

The Suzuki Program is a core part of our extra-curricular Elementary music program for students who play violin or cello.

This program is based on the philosophy of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki’s Talent Education. Students practice the given Suzuki repertoire and play as a group ensemble once a week during lunch recess. Two Suzuki Concerts are held each year, once in Winter and once in Spring.

We offer 7 different levels for Suzuki Violin: Suzuki Twinkle, Suzuki I, Suzuki II, Suzuki III, Suzuki IV, Suzuki V, Suzuki Solo. The Suzuki Cello Program is divided into 3 different levels: Suzuki Cello Intermediate, Suzuki Cello Advanced, and Suzuki Solo. The repertoire is chosen from the Suzuki books I-V, with the exception of Suzuki Solo students.

Course Objectives:

The Suzuki classes provide the students with an opportunity to develop skills on the violin and cello while performing diverse music in the Suzuki Repertoire. The students learn good performance techniques and persevere on memorization of music. Listening skills, discipline, team work and general musicianship are the developed. Students in this program are highly motivated to develop their talents as a string player.

Elementary Band

4th - 5th grades

Prerequisites:

6 months of private lessons or one year of school band experience

Description of the Course:

The Elementary Band is a small instrumental ensemble, composed of wind, brass, and percussion instruments. The primary focus is to provide younger performers, who have extensive experience, an opportunity to develop beyond the limits of basic techniques. The band rehearses twice a week for 30 minutes during the elementary lunch recesses. The band participates in two concerts annually.

Course Objectives:

The Elementary Band will provide accelerated instruction on wind and percussion instruments, focusing on breath-control, tone production and support, and concert preparation.

Grade 5 Band

5th grade

Description of Course:

This course is offered to Grade 5 students during their music specials rotation once every five days. This course introduces students to the basics of playing an instrument, including reading music; learning to produce a good sound and articulation; and proper care of the instrument.

While there are no prerequisites for Grade 5 Band, three months of private instrument lessons the summer before 5th grade is strongly recommended. Students must provide their own instruments. Larger instruments such as trumpets, French-horns, trombones, baritones, and tubas may be checked out from the school if available.

Course Objectives:

The objective of this course is to expose elementary students to the world of playing a wind or percussion instrument. This course may serve to guide them in their decisions for Middle School.

Grade 5 Choir

5th grade

Description of Course:

Choir is offered to fifth grade students. Fun two and three part music are explored, and students in the choir perform in front of their peers during different occasions.

Course Objectives:

Students will gain a positive group ensemble experience that emphasizes group-work skills, discipline, and commitment.

COMPUTERS

1st - 5th grades

Description of Course:

Elementary School computer classes work to integrate and enhance classroom curriculum. Some lessons are knowledge-acquisition-based while others are project-based, showcasing research and preparation work which has been done previously in the library and the classroom. Teachers and students have access to the Computer Lab, the Library Lab, and the Check-out Lab. Each classroom and all labs are equipped with a digital projector and internet access.


Technology skills are taught and integrated into the current lesson or project. Students and teachers are supported by a Technology Integration Specialist and a Teacher Librarian. We see technology as a tool which enhances and embellishes teaching and learning. It adds excitement and another dimension.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

K - 5th grades

Description of Course:

The Elementary Physical Education program strives to develop students loco -motor and non-loco-motor skills. Movement and learning programs begin with the basic motor skills and progress through more difficult and challenging skills and activities.


Students experience activities that challenge their ability to cooperate with others, work as a unified team, overcome obstacles, and learn to be both leaders and followers. Students are taught to make healthy choices, understand physical skills in a variety of sports, and develop a lifelong positive attitude towards physical fitness.


Activities:

Modified games, Basketball, Soccer, Floor Hockey, Swimming, Dance, Gymnastics, Volleyball and many more.

READING

K - 5th grades

Description of Course:

ESL grade one students are fully integrated into mainstream grade one classes. There are three ESL students in each of the four grade ones. They are immersed all day in the target language and they follow the academic content of grade one. Students receive support to improve their reading and writing skills. The support lessons take place in classrooms or in the Reading Special’s room. Lessons can be with a small group or individually.

Course Objectives:

The main objective is to help ESL grade one students learn English in the best environment possible and to help students become successful readers and writers.
